.AbstractThe increasing use of glass reinforced plastic (GRP) pressure vessels in the chemical processing industry has led to the need for an accurate assessment of their behaviour under localised loading applications. The possibility of laminating the vessel in different ways, taking account of the materials anisotropy gives additional design flexibility.In the present paper an analytical approach is outlined for the local load problem for laminated vessels. The shell lay-up is composed of specially orthotopic layers and chopped strand mat (CSM), the arrangement of which may be non-symmetric through the wall thickness. The theory is developed using Sanders’ thin shell analysis, neglecting the transverse shear distortion.To validate the analysis a series of experiments were undertaken on a 2-m diameter, 4-m long GRP vessel.

Three different patch sizes were investigated. The result of these tests are compared to the theoretical predictions and with the approach presented in the British Standard BS 4994:1987. It is found that the method used in the BS always predicts higher strain values than both the theoretical and experimental analyses.
