Hopkins enjoyed a five-game stretch last season in which the Vikings defense was downright nasty. Its offense wasn’t too shabby, either. It started Sept. 28 when the Vikings defeated Buchanan 55-0 in Week 6 and continued through their 46-6 win against Berrien Springs in the opening round of the Division 5 playoffs.

In all, the Vikings outscored their opponents 217-24 during that run.The good news for the Vikings is that they return a trio of three-year starters in seniors Drew Weber, Ethan Gilder and Chase Groenhout. The three help anchor Hopkins’ offensive and defensive lines. In addition, the Vikings will have junior running back Colin Weber to run behind that line for an offense that scored 451 points last year, which was their most since 2008. Weber has been a starter since he was called up to the varsity his freshman season, and he has an offer to play basketball at Grand Valley State University.‘Our strength is that the number of returning starters and knowing what the expectations are for the football program,” Hopkins coach Cody Francis said. “It’s all going to come down to blocking and tackling better.

It’s all about knowing what your systems are and what’s important to you and staying true to that and not letting the diversity of the game, being down in a situation and trailing in a spot and letting that define you. We have to keep fighting.“There were a lot of games where it was close until halftime when we were able to pull it out in the fourth quarter because we believed in each other. And I hope that is going to be the strength this year.”Francis and the Vikings participated in the Aug. 1 Grand Rapids High School Football Media Day on Aug. 1 at Gilda’s Club. The Vikings opened camp Monday, marking the beginning of Francis’ ninth season at the helm.

Hopkins will open the season Aug. 29 at Ravenna. Francis has guided the Vikings to the state playoffs five times, including last year when Hopkins finished 9-2 overall and won the OK Silver Conference championship with a 6-0 mark. Kalamazoo Hackett eliminated the Vikings in the second round of the playoffs, 46-35.One of the goals for the Vikings in training camp is to determine who will play quarterback. Francis said the Vikings are looking at Trevor Smith and Trey Collins for the job.Carson Delao and Hunter Braford are key seniors. Delao is a running back, while Braford will see action at defensive back.“Matt Cleypool and Ben Roberts are both seniors, and they had roles last year,” Francis said.

“I’m expecting them to step in bigger roles this year.”Check out Hopkins’ 2019 schedule:8/29 – At Ravenna9/6 – At Morley-Stanwood9/13 – Belding9/20 – Godwin Heights9/27 – At Kelloggsville10/4 – At Godwin Heights10/11 – At Belding10/18 – Kelloggsville10/25 – vs. Menominee at Petoskey View Comments.
